After showing my daughter a dead cicada, she proceeded to “philosophize” with words from one of her books--“And when Grandma died, they all said prayers to lift her soul to heaven.”Then she looked up at me and continued, “Daddy, I think you may die before Momma, and when Momma dies, it’ll just be me and all my things to play with.”

My daughter just celebrated her 4th birthday and friends came over with a present inside a paper bag.My little one then queried, “What’s in the bag?”“A present for you,” replied our friend.Looking somewhat serious, my daughter then asked, “Did you know what it was before you put it in the bag?”

At dinner time we generally say a prayer over our food. My daughter always leads the prayer. On this one occasion she decided to improvise a little.“Thanks to God for the food we’re about to eat--the salad; the olive oil; the pasta; the fish; the dessert; the people who are eating; their hair; their eyes; their nipples and their breasts.Thank you, Amen.”all content The New Parent © 2007
